I’m sitting here behind my keyboard thinking to myself “Is Cusco, Peru a safe place to visit?” As it turns out, the answer is yes. Be reasonable, prefer daytime and enjoy all that Cusco has to offer.
Cusco is one of the most visited cities in Peru because of its proximity to the famous site of Machu Picchu as well as some of the most famous hiking trails in the world. Before my visit last year, I did some research to conclude that Cusco is a safe place to visit as long as you are taking precautionary measurements. Here is why Cusco is a safe place to visit:
Tourist police officers are everywhere
If you walk around the main attractions in Cusco, especially the Historical District at the main plaza, you will notice men and women officials dressed in fancy green uniforms. Dressed up with black boots, white leather, and cute dress hats, they are literally everywhere. Their job is to protect tourists against crimes (thefts, assaults), and they also play the role of medical first-responders when needed.
As you’d expect, safety numbers are higher when the sun is up, so feel free to roam during the day, but it’s always wise to stay out of dark alleys once nighttime arrives. Safearound has some good numbers that can help you customize your exploring.

Overall risk in Cusco is medium
Crimes against tourists are frowned upon as tourism is the main source of income for the city. The government works hard to keep Cusco a safe destination for tourists. Regardless, protect your valuable items, watch your back, and avoid late night or early morning walks on your own.
