Puerto Peñasco, also know as Rocky Point is a Mexican city on the sea of Cortez only 4 hours away from metro Phoenix. This explains why it is called Arizona’s beach.
Puerto Peñasco is a popular beach destination for a lot of people from Arizona, San Diego, Nevada and even Colorado.
We spent 3 days in the Mexican state of Sonora and I will share with you a list of things you absolutely want to do while in this sandy piece of heaven.
But before we get to that, make sure to read about things to keep in mind before you go to Rocky Point
Now that you know how to prepare for your trip, here are the top 10 things you should try in Rocky point.
Walk the Malecon
The Malecon is the beating heart of the city. It is a gathering place with shops, restaurants, people watching the sunset and even music concerts.
You will find the main square with the famous “Puerto Peñasco” sign, historical sculptures as well as the most vibrant restaurants and bars in Puerto Peñasco.
This place can get pretty crowded with traffic, so if you feel like getting out and walking around, don’t be afraid to park on the little hilly areas near the waterfront and then just walk over.
Take a sunset cruise
Nothing beats the landscape of the sun going down in the sea of Cortez. It is something that you ABSOLUTELY don’t want to miss.
I read good reviews online about a cruise line called “Senorita Rita” and I was pleased with their service. They offer drinks and food included in your ticket and they also have music and restrooms on board.
The cruise is about 2 hours long and departs from the port before the sunset. You will be able to see the sun going down and if you’re lucky, you might be able to spot some dolphins.
Swim in Sandy beach
Also know as Playa Arenosa, Sandy beach is one of the most popular beaches in Puerto Penasco. It is a famous destination among snorkelers and scuba divers.
Indulge on fresh seafood
This is the place to be if you like seafood, especially Shrimp (Camarones in Spanish). The fish market is where you can purchase fresh seafood, I was able to bring about 3 pounds of shrimp across the boarder with no issues.
There are also plenty of seafood restaurants to choose from.
Shop for Mexican goods
If you are the type of person who is more into shopping, you won’t be disappointed. Plenty of Mexican goods are available in shops as well as in the streets of El Malecon. Don’t be afraid to negotiate prices if you have to.
Visit El pinacate y Gran desierto de altar biosphere reserve
This reserve is not a very famous destination for a lot of tourists but it is worth a visit. I was very excited to check it out but it was unfortunately closed and I am very much looking forward to making a trip out there in the future.
Stay or Visit one of Puerto Penasco’s resorts
Rocky point is considered a resort destination and indeed there are plenty of resorts to choose from, the most known ones are: Las Palomas Beach and Golf Resort and Laguna Shores Resort
I have not stayed in a resort and I don’t have a lot to share but we drove around couple of them and they all look like they have a lot to offer.
Rent an ATV and enjoy the ride
Renting an ATV or a quad is a fun way to explore the city and yes you can ride in the streets too. Prices can range between $15 to $50. I recommend checking FMI rentals for more information.
This was my list of places and things you absolutely should do while in Arizona’s beach. Let me know in a comment if you found this guide useful and enjoy your visit to Rocky point!
