When you think of Las Vegas, outdoor activities may not be the first thing that comes to mind with the usual images of glittering casinos and luxury poker rooms along the iconic Strip.
But Las Vegas is actually close to lots of exciting natural wonders – whether you’re looking to hike, bike, or even kayak. In fact, if you consider the Grand Canyon as a dream outdoor experience—with its impressive terrain and immense rock formations—you’ll be pleased to know that Las Vegas is just a stone’s throw away from a few similar attractions. As such, it’s no surprise that Las Vegas is expected to draw nearly 38 million visitors by the end of 2022 alone.
So if you’re headed to Las Vegas and want to see the wonders outside of the Strip, here are some stunning outdoor must-sees:
Red Rock Canyon
If you’re looking for a break away from the bright lights and the glitz and glamor of The Strip, Red Rock Canyon is one of the best places to go in Las Vegas after you’re done with the poker tables. Located less than 20 minutes from the city center, Red Rock Canyon is Nevada’s first National Conservation Area. With its reddish-brown rock, this canyon offers a beautiful view, and a relaxing, scenic hike.
Aside from hiking, you can even try safe scooter tours on a paved loop around the canyon. Horse riding and jeep tours are also available if you want something more fast-paced. For a new perspective, Red Rock Canyon can also be viewed via helicopter tours.
Valley of Fire
Around a 45-minute drive from Las Vegas, the Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest State Park in Nevada. Among the Valley of Fire’s most famous features include beautiful Aztec sandstone formations from around 150 million years ago. Beyond the colorful sandstone, you can also enjoy the view of petrified trees and 2,000-year-old petroglyphs.
This state park’s Fire Wave Trail is great for all levels of hikers and doesn’t require a hiking permit. At around 1.5 miles out and back, you can easily schedule this hike amid your activities in the Entertainment Capital of the World.
Black Canyon
Ending the list we have the Black Canyon which is 45 minutes away from the Las Vegas Strip. Along guided tours, you can explore natural hot springs, beaches, caves, and desert landscapes. If you’re looking for a more soothing, slow-paced adventure, kayaking the Black Canyon will take you through a 12-mile stretch of the Colorado River. Meanwhile, if you’re in the mood for something a bit more challenging, the Black Canyon Water trail offers rafting and fishing activities.
Just as the bustle of the Strip is part of Las Vegas’ identity, so are the many natural outdoor attractions. Perfect for any nature-loving adventurer, these accessible canyons and trails should definitely be a part of your Vegas itinerary.
I’ll have to put these places on my bucket list! Thanks for the info
Nice to see there are outdoor adventures near Las Vegas – a different side of Nevada! I always think of just the glitzy glamour which doesn’t really appeal to me. I know, I know, that’s not all there is to it, LOL.
I was also amazed finding out about all the natural gems around Las Vegas
I really want to visit Las Vega, good to know that there are nearby outdoor activities too and not just fancy hotels!
