Oregon is the type of state that has a lot to offer. From mountains to waterfalls, to the ocean, to a wide dry desert, there is no possible way you won’t find an activity you enjoy most. Though it was not planned, I ended up having a beautiful New Year’s holiday in the city of roses.
In this article I will share with you 10 things that you must do while in Portland:
Drive up to to Multnomah Falls
Less than an hour out of downtown Portland is the talest waterfall in the state of Oregon and the second tallest year-round waterfall in the United “Multnomah Falls”, standing at an elevation of 620 feet.
Either you go for a short hike up to the bridge separating the waterfall into two sections or hangout at the bottom to check out the Lodge, you will have a good time soaking in the beauty of this natural landmark.
Visit the famous Powell’s book store
This is the largest independently owned bookstore in the world. It is located in the heart of Portland’s pear district.
The store contains over four million books (Used, rare and new), with nine color-coded rooms and over 3,500 sections.
Tour Pittock’s mansion
This mansion was constructed back in 1909 as a private property for Henry Pittock and his wife Georgina.
Besides its breathtaking interior design, the mansion is built on top of a hill that provides breathtaking views of downtown Portland and Mount Hood (The highest mount in Oregon)
Catch a shuttle to Timberline lodge
As it was winter time, I wanted to spend more time in snow and load on hot chocolate. Timberline lodge at the base of Mount Hood seemed to be the way to go.
The lodge is 81 years old at the very least and is still open for visitors. Not to forget the ski and snowboarding area open for snow sports fans during winter time.
Walk in Tom McCall Waterfront
Or rent a bike and ride along the Willamette river. There is an opportunity to watch bridges raise up to let boats pass by, but most importantly to enjoy a 36 acre city park.
Enjoy a bite of Voodoo Doughnut
Though I did not have a chance to try it, Voodoo Doughnut is one of the most recommended Doughnut in Portland.
Take a bus ride across the city’s multiple bridges
Portland has 12 bridges over the Willamette River, some of them for pedestrians, others Cary roads.
Enjoy people watching at Pioneer Courthouse Square
In the heart of Downtown Portland is the Pioneer Courthouse square also known as Portland’s living room.
Drive up to Vista house for a beautiful view of Colombia river
Vista house is located at 733 feet above the Columbia River on the south side of the Columbia River Gorge.
Crack some locally harvested hazelnuts
I don’t know about me but I love me some fresh locally harvested hazelnuts!!
